I've become reacquainted with a book I discovered a year or so ago, titled The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz.
The book is described clearly in this wiki page, and the punchline/outline is clearly described in this blog entry from 43 Folders.
This is an excellent book for those interested in stopping being "victims" or being in pain, and instead, take a proactive, strategic planning attitude to life and relationships. It's especially an excellent book to demistify codependence in social environments and how to take one's own life in our own hands.
An excellent self-help book all around. Very caring and helpful author. I particularly enjoy the CD version which is read by Peter Coyote.
