Winter

Winter's chilly breath slowly reaches, makes its way to the hair upon my neck,

as shivers travel swiftly up and down my spine, not unlike familiar, pointy fingers,

I notice with a furtive sideways glance that the days grow shorter and the leaves grow fewer upon branches near and far

with the swishing, whirling remnants of a summer and autumn gone by, swept away, forgotten

the colors slowly and quietly leak out of still lives around, everywhere

it's time for the shadows to grow longer and darker, enveloping, and what was once warm afternoon breezes to turn into electrifying night gales

which are rasping, grasping shrilly on our windows and roofs, as we slumber, meanwhile, warm and cozy, searching for a sunnier tomorrow
